LEWISTON, Maine — A grand opening celebration was held Wednesday for a new affordable housing development in Lewiston.
The Picker House Lofts are a redevelopment of the historic Continental Mill on Cedar Street.
Last year, The Szanton Company bought about 15 percent of the Continental Mill from the company that owns the rest of the structure. Since then, it has been working on the Picker House Lofts project, which consists of 72 units.
Nathan Szanton, the company's president, stated that approximately one-third of the units are market-rate. In contrast, the others are reserved for individuals earning less than 60 percent of the area's median income. These units are income-restricted, meaning there is a limit on the amount of household income that can be earned, which varies based on household size.
“One of the great things about being in the business we're in, is if you're ever feeling discouraged about the world or about life, you can come down to a place like this and look around and realize that with the help of so many of you here today,” Said Nathan Szanton to the crowd on Wednesday’s grand opening. “We really made a difference. We really made a difference in this little corner of the world.”
Saco Falls Management, which manages the building, posted the following income limit breakdown for the property on social media:
Income Limits:
1 Person -$34,620
2 People -$39,600
3 People -$44,520
4 People -$49,440
5 People -$53,400
6 People -$57,360
Unit Rents:
1 bedroom: $822
2 bedroom: $992
3 bedroom: $1,146
The development's 72 apartments are all occupied or reserved, according to a release from the office of Gov. Janet Mills. The governor attended the grand opening on Wednesday among many other supporters of the development.
“My administration will do all we can to support projects like these and the creative ways that developers are revitalizing old buildings and old spaces to rebuild vibrant communities.” Said Governor Mills.
“This project not only adds 72 much needed housing units but also breathes new life into this historic landmark along the Androscoggin River. The Szanton Company has shown us what thoughtful development looks like, a blend of workforce and market rate apartments that ensures a diverse and thriving community.” Said Lewiston Mayor Sheline.
